The first ever IPR Enforcement Coordination Committee meets in Quetta
QUETTA, January 23, 2019: The first Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Enforcement Coordination Committee, Quetta met on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Mr. Muhammad Irfan Tarar, Director General, IPO-Pakistan at Customs House, Quetta.
The meeting reviewed the role of provincial Food and Health departments against counterfeiting and piracy and expressed the resolve that zero tolerance would be shown against such issues and all out efforts would be made for the development of genuine businesses.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. Irfan Tarar said enforcement of IP rights through designated law enforcement agencies, i.e. Police, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Pakistan Customs etc. is one of the key functions of IPO-Pakistan. He informed that similar Committees for the IPR enforcement have also been established in other key cities of the country. These would effectively address the issues of piracy and counterfeiting.
The meeting was informed that IP Tribunals are fully functional and anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting cells have been established at the offices of IPO-Pakistan for coordination with Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs).
The committee decided that reports of IPR cases will also be regularly shared by enforcement agencies with IPO-Pakistan on quarterly and annual basis. It was further decided that capacity building programs for LEAs and awareness activities for business community will be conducted for effective IPR enforcement and genuine business development.
Earlier, Mr. Muhammad Ismail, Director (Enforcement), IPO-Pakistan gave a detailed presentation over the enforcement of IPRs in the country. He also apprised the committee about improving Pakistan’s IP image among the comity of nations during last few years.
The meeting was attended among others by Mr. Muhammad Naseer, Executive Director IPO-Pakistan, Mr. Ashraf Ali, Collector Customs, Mr. Abdul Latif Kakar, DG Food, Mr. Altaf Hussain, Director FIA and Abdul Aziz Jakhrani, SP Saddar Quetta.
