IPR Enforcement Coordination Committee meets in Multan

MULTAN, October 25, 2018: The Enforcement Coordination Committee of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) has termed counterfeiting and piracy a crime against innovation and creativity and expressed the resolve that the issue would be dealt relentlessly and all out efforts would be made for the development of genuine businesses.

The decision was made during the 1st IPR Enforcement Coordination Committee Meeting in Multan held here on Thursday. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Muhammad IrfanTarar, Director General Intellectual Property Organization (IPO-Pakistan).

The meeting was informed that IP Tribunals are fully functional and anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting cells have been established at the offices of IPO-Pakistan for coordination with Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs).

The meeting decided that the complaints received will be forwarded to concerned law enforcement agencies, while quarterly and annual reports of IPR cases will also be regularly shared by enforcement agencies with IPO-Pakistan.

Addressing the meeting, Mr. IrfanTarar said enforcement of IP rights through designated law enforcement agencies, i.e. Police, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Pakistan Customs etc. is one of the key functions of IPO-Pakistan. Similar Committees for the IPR enforcement have also been established in other key cities of the country. These would effectively address the issues of piracy and counterfeiting.

It was decided that capacity building programs for LEAs and awareness activities for business community will be conducted in Multan region for effective IPR enforcement and genuine business development.

Earlier, Mr. Muhammad Ismail, Director (Enforcement), IPO-Pakistan gave a detailed presentation over the enforcement of IPRs in the country. He also apprised the committee about improving Pakistan’s IP image among the comity of nations during last few years.

The meeting was attended among others by Mr. Muhammad Naseer, Executive Director IPO-Pakistan, Ms. Ambreen Ahmed, Collector, Model Customs Collectorate, Multan and senior officers from FIA, Punjab Police, Punjab Food Authority and Health Authority.
